Wensleydale Creamery is the factory (creamery) in Hawes that produces genuine Wensleydale cheese. Cheese was made in the Dales in the 12th century by French Franciscan monks. The first creamery in Hawes began in 1897. This survived in various forms until 1992, when a management buyout resulted in the present company. It produces 20 varieties of cheese, employs 200 people and exports all over the world. A visit is a good rainy day option. From Wensleydale Creamery’s visitor centre, you can learn a bit about the history of cheese and its production and view the factory to see how cheese is made. The best part, however, is the shop, where you can sample and buy the products!
