St Peter’s, Heysham, is in a surprisingly evocative location overlooking Morecambe bay and adjacent to the scant remains of St Patrick’s chapel.  First recorded in 907, the earliest church that stood on the site was Anglo-Saxon, quite probably 8th century – some think earlier. Parts of a Saxon church have been rebuilt in the churchyard, where there is also the remains of an Anglo-Saxon cross and a medieval stone coffin. In 1080, the Normans incorporated the older church into their new one. St Peter’s was rebuilt and refurbished from later medieval times and up to the 19th century. Inside (if you’re lucky enough to find the church open), one of several treasures is a rare 10th century Viking hog-back stone.
