The parish church of St Oswald, Warton, is dedicated to the 7th century Northumbrian Christian king. The large present building dates from the 15th century, with much renovation work in the 19th century, though it is believed that a church has stood on the site for at least 1,000 years. The village has associations with the ancestors of George Washington, the de Wessingtons, who lived in the area for some 600 years and held land around Kendal and Carnforth. The Washington coat of arms is on one of the church pews and there is a Stars and Stripes in the church, said to have once flown from the Capitol in Washington DC. It was a gift from American visitors and is flown from the church tower each 4th July, American Independence Day.
