The Philharmonic Dining Rooms is possibly the most ornate pub in Britain. also known as ‘the Philly’, the Philharmonic Dining Rooms is a grand pub opposite Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall, built in grand Victorian splendour, somewhat in the style of a gentlemen’s club, at the end of the 19th century. Gents – you really should check out the gents. The Philly has been – and probably still is – visited by the great and the good of Liverpool, as well as illustrious others. Buddy Holly and the Crickets played there in March 1958 as part of their British tour. Paul McCartney did a surprise gig there with James Corden in 2018. The Beatles were known to drink there, though John Lennon’s favourite was Ye Cracke, round the corner in Rice Street.
