Newcastle’s castle

Where is it – England, North East England

Who looks after it –  Local partnership

What is it –  Castle or Fort, Roman site

When is it from – Medieval, Norman

At Newcastle’s Castle you can visit the substantial partly ruined remains of the medieval castle, the keep and black tower, that gave the City its name. The ‘new’ castle was Norman, a motte and bailey affair. The stone version dates from the 12th century. Actually, the site has been occupied since Roman times, when it was called Pons Aelius (‘bridge of Hadrian’). Despite the fact that the Victorians saw fit to drive a railway through their heritage (ass you can see), the castle is well worth a visit. It has a fascinating history, including of the time when the castle was a slum, and offers great views of the City and River Tyne.
