The magnificent ruins of Middleham Castle exude history. This was once a mighty fortress of the powerful Neville family, where Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later Richard III, spent part of his childhood. Richard later owned the castle and his son was born and died in it. You can imagine the hooves galloping over the non-existent drawbridge and the views from the top of the keep are amazing. The castle dates from the late 12th century, but eagle-eyed castle enthusiasts will spot the remains of the original Norman motte and bailey castle to the south. Here, you might find the treasure of Gilpatric the Dane, which is rumoured to be lying around somewhere.

There’s a small exhibition, which includes a replica of the exquisite Middleham Jewel, a 15th century pendant found nearby. The town of Middleham is lovely, too, and worth exploring.
