The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway is a heritage railway that runs steam and diesel locomotives on a former branch line of the Furness Railway. The line is just over 3 miles long, between Lakeside Station at the southern tip of Lake Windermere and Haverthwaite – a charming journey of about 20 minutes each way. Steamers run to Lakeside from Windermere and Ambleside, so both modes of transport can be combined. Other bolt-on options include the Lakes Aquarium at Lakeside and and the Motor Museum at Backbarrow. At Haverthwaite Station are all things railway, including engine sheds where locos can be inspected and a shop that sells suitable souvenirs. Thomas the Tank Engine has been known to visit sometimes. There is also a play area, woodland walk and cafe.
