IWM North is the northern branch of the Imperial War Museum, headquartered in London, dedicated to the story of conflicts since 1914. IWM North is a modern museum in a purpose-built building which includes some large exhibits, and particularly themed exhibitions, but its main feature is its ‘Big Picture Show’ which uses massive projected images to tell of people’s experiences of war. It is not subtle. Visitors can also explore timelines and often handle smaller objects. Among the eclectic range of items on display are Tolkien’s revolver from WW1, a twisted section of steel window frame from New York’s Twin Towers, a Harrier fighter jet, a Soviet T-34 tank, an East German Trabant motor car and Heinrich Himmler’s death mask.

There’s something for the whole family at IWM North; it is highly visual.
