The Great Stone of Forestones, not far from the town of Bentham in the Forest of Bowland, is a local landmark. Some simply call it ‘The Big Stone’.  Once, it was a marker on the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire; possibly it was a meeting place in ancient times. At some point, someone cut steps into the side. Though the immediate area is quite bleak, the views are great. The Great Stone of Fourstones (the other three have disappeared) is a glacial erratic – though ’tis also said that the Devil dropped the stone on his way to build the Devil’s Bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale about 11 miles away.
