CZECHOSLOVAKIAN SOE memorial

The Czechoslovakian SOE memorial at Arisaig commemorates the Czechoslovak troops in exile who trained in the area during WW2 as part of SOE (Special Operations Executive).  Czech Jan Kubiš and Slovak Jozef Gabčík went on to carry out Operation Anthropoid, the assassination of SS Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich in Prague on 27th May 1942. They died, or committed suicide, in a subsequent shoot-out, when German troops surrounded a church they were hiding in.

Czechoslovakia has been two sovereign states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, since 1993.

DALWHINNIE Distillery

Dalwhinnie Distillery is located within the Cairngorm National Park and said to be the highest distillery in Scotland. The name 'Dalwhinnie' is derived from the Gaelic for 'meeting place', where cattle drovers would gather in days gone by. Dalwhinnie's 15-year old single malt is allegedly known for its gentle flavours accentuated with notes of heather honey, citrus, vanilla and sweet malt. You can sample this at a tasting, or at the end of a tour to see how it is made, accompanied by a handmade chocolate. Dalwhinnie Distillery tours are renowned for the friendliness and expertise of the guides. It is always advisable to book before making a special trip.

Dalwhinnie is part of the massive Diageo group, whose other whisky brands include Cragganmore, Glenkinchie, Lagavulin, Oban and Talisker. According to Wikipedia, Dalwhinnie village is one of the coldest inhabited places in Britain; bear that in mind if you decide to visit in winter.

DEVIL’S PORRIDGE MUSEUM

The Devil's Porridge Museum tells the story of the greatest munitions factory on earth and the lives of the people who worked there. HM Factory Gretna opened in 1916 in response to the Shells Crisis of 1915 and manufactured RDB Cordite.  Cordite was (or is) a powerful explosive, whose ingredients include a mixture of guncotton and nitro-glycerine, which was said by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to be the Devil's Porridge.  HM Factory Gretna stretched over 9 miles between England and Scotland and at its height employed 30,000 people, about 70% of them women.  It included two planned towns, Eastriggs and Gretna.  Now, little remains except the towns.  The museum also includes displays relating to Quintinshill Railway Disaster and how the area contributed to the country's defence through World War Two and beyond.

DORNOCH CATHEDRAL

The interior of tiny Dornoch Cathedral is stunning: magnificent stained glass windows set in simple stone walls, crowned by a white, vaulted, roof. It exudes tranquillity. Founded by the Bishop of Sutherland, Gilbert de Moravia a little after 1222, in 1570 Dornoch Cathedral was almost totally destroyed during a clan feud between the Murrays of Dornoch and the Mackays of Strathnaver, when it was set on fire. It was partially repaired in 1616, but the restoration was not completed until the 19th century. The pop star Madonna had her son, Rocco, baptised at Dornoch in 2000; she and her then husband, Guy Ritchie, were married at nearby Skibo Castle.

DRUMLANRIG CASTLE

Drumlanrig Castle is the Dumfriesshire seat of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry, one of Scotland’s finest examples of 17th-century Renaissance architecture and more like a French château than what you might of as a castle.  It comes with a history.  Drumlanrig was a Douglas stronghold, built on land given to the Douglas’ by Robert Bruce in the 14th century.  The Douglas Clan motto is ‘Forward Braveheart!’ and the winged hearts of the family crest are everywhere - carved into stone, decorating ceilings, carpets, gutters – even garden beds.

The Castle has 120 rooms, 17 turrets and four towers and is renowned for its art collection, the Buccleuch Collection, which includes works by Gainsborough, Rembrandt and Holbein.  It houses tapestries allegedly worked by Mary, Queen of Scots and, of course, Bonny Prince Charlie once stayed the night there.

Outside is a 90,000-acre estate, with gardens, miles of beautiful walks, bike trails, fishing and an adventure playground.

DRUMMOND CASTLE

The first Drummond Castle was built on a rocky outcrop by John, 1st Lord Drummond in around 1490. The castle is not open to the public, but Drummond Castle gardens, considered to be among Scotland’s most important formal gardens, as well as among the finest in Europe, are.  They were first laid out in the early 17th century, redesigned and terraced in the 19th century and replanted following the Second World War, preserving features such as the ancient yew hedges and copper beech trees planted by Queen Victoria, to commemorate her visit in 1842.  Entry is via a mile-long beech avenue up through a gatehouse and portcullis, after which the parterre is revealed.  Drummond Castle Gardens featured as the gardens of Versailles in Season 2 of the TV series ‘Outlander’ and also appeared in 1995 film ‘Rob Roy’.

DUN BEAG

Dun Beag (the small fort) is the best known, best preserved and most accessible broch on Skye. Brochs are unique to Scotland - they were probably defensive homes, though no one is sure, and were built about 2-2,500 years ago. Dun Beag is situated just north of Struan, to the east of the road - there is a small car park and you will need stout footwear and lungs for the sort walk uphill to look at it. The distinctive double walls are more or less intact to about 6 feet - originally it would have stood about 30-40 feet high. The views are wonderful. The rubble of Dun Mor (the big fort) is less than 1/2 mile further on - take a map.

Post code for Dun Beag is very approximate - look for signs.

Dun da Lamh

Dun da Lamh (pronounced ‘doon da larve’) is a prehistoric, believed to be early Pictish, hilltop fort near Laggan in the Highlands.  It sits on Black Craig, 1484 feet above sea level and 600 feet above the land below, overlooking the River Spey to the north.  The fort is approximately 360 feet (110 metres) long by about 98-246 feet (30 and 75 metres) wide.  Inside are shelters, believed to have been constructed by the Home Guard during WW2.

The fort’s sole defence is a stone wall, which has been cleared in places.  It is constructed of fine quality stone slabs resembling bricks totalling an estimated 5000 tons which are not from the local valley. It has been skilfully made.  The fort is so steep on three sides as to be impregnable and is only approachable from the west where the walls are over 20 feet thick.  Dun da Lamh means ‘fort of the two hands’.  The plaque on the site asks was it a frontier fortress of a great Pictish nation guarding the farmlands to the north and east; or was it something else?

Dun da Lamh can only be reached by foot and it is a strenuous walk for which you should dress appropriately and allow a couple of hours each way, depending on conditions and fitness.  There are a variety of starting points, including a way-marked route from Laggan Wolftrax (as per postcode).  Others suggest starting from the car park opposite the Pattack Falls Forestry Commission Car Park off the A86.

DUNDONALD CASTLE

There’s little romantic or pretty about Dundonald Castle.  Perched high above the village, it is a no-fuss functional and formidable 3-storey tower house inside a walled enclosure.  The high-vaulted halls and gloomy prison of this powerful medieval stronghold, built in the 1370s by King Robert II, can still be appreciated.  Robert was high steward of Scotland and the first Stewart monarch, whose descendant James VI would become King of England and Wales. The castle stands on the site of at least two earlier castles as well as Bronze Age and Iron Age remains.
