The World of James Herriot is an award winning visitor attraction in the attractive Dales market town of Thirsk. This is the former surgery and home of vet turned author James Herriot, real name James Alfred Wight (1916-1995). His books and the films and TV series have helped draw visitors to the Yorkshire Dales. The building has been meticulously restored to a 1940s home and surgery, known in Wight’s books as the fictional Skeldale House, in Darrowby. It comes complete with air raid shelter and historic veterinary instruments. Also featured are reproduced film studios from the original ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ TV series, which ran from 1978 to 1990. The museum even has the original 1934 Austin 7 car used in that series as well as the 1938 Austin 7 that appeared in the film ‘It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vet’. There is much more to see, including heaps of Herriot memorabilia. Modern visitors may make for Grassington, but James Wight’s home in Thirsk is where James Herriot really happened!
