What is it –  Deserted settlement, Free access, Ruin

When is it from – Medieval, Tudor

Wharram Percy is one of Britain’s most famous and researched fascinating deserted medieval villages (DMV), probably occupied from the Iron Age before being abandoned in the 16th century. The villagers had survived the Black Death, famine and Scots’ raids – but could not survive sheep. There is not much to see except the ruined church and the outlines of houses and streets, but it’s an intriguing place and there are some good information boards. There is no vehicular access and there are no facilities. It is a walk of about 3/4 mile over an uneven path through farmland from a car park off the B1248 – and it can be muddy. There is a small charge for parking, except for members of English Heritage.
