German U-boat U-534 mysteriously refused to surrender at the end of World War Two, and was on a northerly course from Denmark when it was attacked, and sunk, by an RAF Liberator. Most of the crew survived. The wreck was recovered in 1993 and now sits in Birkenhead. The ship itself has been cut away to reveal its rusted and destroyed interior. It is one of just 4 surviving German U-boats from the Second World War.  There is also an interesting exhibition as part of the Western Approaches Museum.

NOTE As of 2023 a new museum has been proposed for Birkenhead which will include U-534. Estimated completion sometime in 2025 – meanwhile U-534 is closed to the public. Check with Western Approaches (website below) for more information and updates.
