The Tyne Bridge is one of several iconic symbols of Newcastle upon Tyne. Probably the most famous of several handsome bridges nearby, the Tyne Bridge was designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson and built by the same company that later built Sydney Harbour Bridge, Dorman Long and Co. It was opened by King George V on 10th October 1928 and carries the A167 road across the River Tyne between Gateshead and Newcastle. The Tyne Bridge is a single span of 531 feet (162 metres) over the river, with clearance of around 84 feet (26 metres) for ships to pass underneath. Watch out for nesting birds.
