Tosside is a tiny, old, village, probably with a Norse name, high on the hills on the edge of the Forest of Bowland.  Although technically in North Yorkshire, it is half in Lancashire. It is certainly a bit off the beaten track but there is good walking, cycling and horse riding nearby in the adjoining Gisburn Forest, which is  within the Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the largest forest in Lancashire.  Tosside’s St Bartholomew’s church dates from 1694 and features a 17th Century octagonal font made of stone from the Forest of Bowland and a Jacobean pulpit dated 1701. Next door is the old Dog and Partridge – sadly, closed and up for sale at the time of writing (August 2024). Don’t be fooled by the postal address – it’s 16 miles from Skipton.
