Tarn Hows is one of the few artificial lakes in the English Lake District, formed for a Victorian rich man’s pleasure by damming three smaller tarns – Low Tarn, Middle Tarn and High Tarn. A ‘tarn’ is a local term for a small lake. Tarn Hows is now a well-known beauty spot between Coniston and Hawkshead, owned by the National Trust, with an easy, circular, walk (under 2 miles) all the way round and a path large enough for buggies and wheelchairs.
