Sulgrave Manor was built by Lawrence Washington, ancestor of George, the First President of the United States. The house dates from the mid 16th century and is built of local limestone. It has a kitchen, buttery, a Great Hall and above a Great Chamber with two smaller private chambers.  The house was restored and refurbished in the 1920s, including the demolition and rebuilding of the west wing.

Lawrence Washington, a Northampton wool-trader who married well, was George Washington’s great-great-great-great-great grandfather. The ancestors of George Washington originated in Washington in North East England in the 12th century, moving to Warton in Lancashire in the 14th century and south to Sulgrave in the 15th. The Washingtons sold Sulgrave in the mid-17th century, and a descendant, John Washington (1631–1677), great-grandfather of George, emigrated to Virginia in 1656.

Note – the postal address for this property is Oxfordshire, but it is actually in Northamptonshire.
