Pictured are the gates of the former Salvation Army children’s home, Strawberry Field, which inspired John Lennon’s 1967 song, ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’. If you visit today – as any Beatles’ fan probably should – the gates you will see are replicas, and have been since 2011; the originals were put on display in The Beatles’ Story museum in June 2017.

Strawberry Field was a Salvation Army children’s home close to where John Lennon grew up. One of his childhood treats was the annual summer garden party that took place in the grounds.  It also became a place of childhood adventure. Paul McCartney described Strawberry Field as a rather wild place, “a secret garden, like in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” It was John’s get-away, an escape. Strawberry Field is now a visitor attraction and a training hub for young people with learning difficulties.
