Stanwick Camp, Brigantes site in Yorkshire

Stanwick Camp

Where is it – England, Yorkshire and the Humber

Who looks after it –  English Heritage

What is it –  Castle or Fort, Deserted settlement, Free access, Prehistoric site

When is it from – Prehistory

Stanwick Camp was once a centre for the powerful Brigante tribe. The remains of the massive ditch fortifications around this Iron Age site can still be made out. It is impressive. Some 4 miles long, the defences enclosed an area of 766 acres. However, don’t be misled by the suggestion of a reconstructed section of fortifications – when visited by ABAB (July 2016), the site was not that well maintained – though the paths were clear. The layman would find it hard to make out what they were looking at, so – unless it has improved – it may not be worth going out of your way for. The most important tribe in pre-Roman northern Britain, the Brigantes later moved to Aldborough Roman town, Isurium Brigantum – which is definitely worth a visit.
