St Mary’s lighthouse at Whitley Bay is a Victorian lighthouse operational from 1898 until 1984. It and the keeper’s cottage are open to visitors. Access is between tides via a pedestrian causeway – and there are 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse where there are spectacular views of the North East coast.  St Mary’s Island is surrounded by rock pools and something of a nature reserve. If you’re lucky, you may spot seals resting on the rocks. The closest dry mainland is called Curry’s Point, named for a Michael Curry who murdered Ian Hartley, landlord of the Three Horseshoes Inn, and who was executed and hung in chains for the crime from a gibbet on the spot in 1739. There is ample parking near the causeway.
