St Andrews, Dent, is an attractive, perpendicular-style, medieval church, probably dating from the 12th century. That said, it is thought Christianity was introduced to Dentdale many centuries before that.

Some say the dedication to St Andrew indicates a Scottish influence in what was, after the Norman conquest, a border area. The church has impressive pillars, 18th century box pews and some lovely stained glass. The tower is 18th century. There is a marble memorial to Adam Sedgwick, the geologist, who was born in the village, and local Dent marble features in the chancel. The box pews were once allocated to the sidesmen, or statesmen, of Dent, who effectively ruled the place from the 15th century. The old grammar school, now a private residence, is in the churchyard. And, just outside the porch, is the grave of the Vampire of Dent, George Hodgson.
