Sizergh Castle, usually simply called Sizergh, is in reality a delightful medieval fortified house.  It has been the home of the Strickland family for more than 750 years. The Stricklands were Roman Catholics when it was unfashionable to be, but somehow managed to survive. This was quite an achievement, especially considering that the invading army of Bonnie Prince Charlie virtually passed by the front door in 1745. That said, one member of the family, Colonel Francis Strickland, was a close companion of the Prince’s and, falling ill, died in Carlisle in 1746. In any event, Sizergh is stuffed with Catholic iconography, wonderful furnishings and other fascinating things – including some unique panelling. Outside are lovely gardens, including an unusual limestone rock garden, kitchen garden, pastures, woodland, orchards, a charming lake and walks farther afield.

It is very handy for the Lake District.
