Rufford Old Hall

Where is it – England, North West England

Who looks after it –  National Trust

What is it –  Garden, House, Supernatural

When is it from – Tudor

All that remains of the Tudor home built at Rufford Old Hall in c1530 is the original – and spectacular – timber-framed hall itself – one of the finest Tudor buildings in England. The west wing of the house is Jacobean with largely Victorian decor. Did William Shakespeare perform at Rufford, as legend has it, for the original owner, Thomas Hesketh? (Most of the owners were called Thomas Hesketh). There are attractive child-friendly gardens, lovely borders and good topiary – spot the giant squirrel. Rufford is also haunted, most popularly by a grey lady. Rufford Old Hall also has another life as a wedding venue, so check before making a special trip. By the way, the 18th century Rufford New Hall is just up the road, divided into flats.
