The Lakeland Motor Museum is something for the petrol-heads, the nostalgists – and a great rainy day option for the Lakes. This is a serious motor museum. 30,000 exhibits are claimed, including wonderful classic cars, bicycles (who knew there were so many types?) and what is possibly the largest collection of ‘automobilia’ (motoring memorabilia) in the world. There are displays, street scenes, stories, period shops and special exhibitions dedicated to the Isle of Man TT and ‘Campbell Bluebird’ – a tribute to the racing Campbells, Malcolm and Donald. The cars include a DMC DeLorean and an East German Trabant. There is even a bit about the fascinating industrial history of the museum site. A personal favourite, however, is the collection of kids’ pedal cars.

As well as getting there by road, it is possible to travel to via boat across Lake Windermere and thence by steam train to nearby Haverthwaite.
