Hill Top was children’s author, illustrator and farmer Beatrix Potter’s house, which she bought in 1905 with proceeds from her first book, the Tale of Peter Rabbit. It was here that she wrote many of her tales. The 17th century house, along with a great deal of land in the Lake District, was left to the National Trust after Beatrix died in 1943. The house is set in a delightful cottage garden, but is tiny inside. Inevitably, it gets crowded – entry is often by timed ticket and queues are likely. Get to Near Sawrey from Hawkshead, or for an interesting route, take your car or bike on the ferry across Windermere from Bowness.
