RHS Harlow Carr near Harrogate is one of four public gardens run by the Royal Horticultural Society. It was acquired when the RHS merged with the Northern Horticultural Society. The latter opened Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens in 1950 having leased 26 acres of woodland, arable land and pasture at Harlow Hill from Harrogate Corporation – primarily to see how plants would get on in northern climes! Many developments have taken place since the merger between the RHS and NHS and Harlow Carr is a stunning place to visit – and much bigger than the original gardens. Beautiful gardens include a rhododendron glade, annual meadows themed with willow woven sculptures, extensive borders, an alpine house, woodland, hedgehog street, kitchen garden, a lake – plus there’s a shop, plant centre (aka ‘shop’) and an elegant tea room run by Betty’s of Harrogate.  What more could you want?
