Furness Abbey was once of the richest and most powerful abbeys in the land, with sister houses located as far away as Ireland and Lincolnshire, and with local assets spread over a wide area. It was founded by Stephen, later King of England, and its remains date mainly from the 12th and 13th centuries. Although ruined, its red sandstone remains contain many examples of its past splendours – and they are extensive. Moreover, if you want to understand medieval monastic drainage, this is a good place to get started. As well as the abbey church and other buildings, there’s a fascinating display of rare effigies in the visitor centre. Also on display is the ‘Furness Crozier’ and abbot’s ring, excavated from a grave in 2010.
