The Freddie Gilroy statue, full name Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers, is an enormous steel sculpture of a former miner overlooking Scarborough’s North Bay. Created by artist Ray Lonsdale, Freddie Gilroy, when a young man, was one of the first Allied troops to enter Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp in 1945. The statue should not be missed.
