Eric Morecambe’s statue in his home town of Morecambe is one of the highlights of the town’s restored promenade. John Eric Bartholomew took his stage name from the town, where he was born on 14 May 1926. He formed one of the most famous comic double-acts entertainment history with Ernie Wise (Ernest Wiseman, 27 November 1925 – 21 March 1999) in 1941 and the Morecambe and Wise act lasted until Morecambe’s early death on 28 May 1984. In the 1970s, the Morecambe and Wise Show was hugely popular on TV, topping the Christmas ratings.

The statue, which is slightly larger than life, was unveiled by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1999. It features Eric Morecambe in a characteristic pose, with a pair of binoculars around his neck (he was a keen ornithologist). Behind is Morecambe Bay and, on the skyline, the Lake District fells. The statue and mini-amphitheatre below have various catchphrases set into the stonework and a list of some of the famous guests that appeared on the Morecambe and Wise Show.  There is normally a small queue of people waiting to be photographed next to the statue.
