There is an impressive statue of King Edward I in the historic village of Burgh by Sands. Why? – because the King went to meet his maker nearby in 1307. The statue was sculpted by Christopher Kelly and was a gift from Story Construction. It marked the 700th anniversary of the great man’s passing in 2007, was unveiled by the Duke of Kent and depicts a vigorous man in his prime, armour-clad, hair loose and flowing, brandishing a sword.

While you’re there, you may as well trek a little further and see the memorial on Solway Plain, where he died. And visit the church.
