The Cockleshell Memorial was erected on the quayside at Birkenhead to commemorate ‘the Cockleshell Heroes’ who undertook the audacious Operation Franklin raid in 1942. One of the heroes was Marine Albert Laver, who came from Birkenhead and was shot by the Germans. The memorial was unveiled in December 2012 by Lord (‘Paddy’) Ashdown (1941-2018), who had served in both the Royal Marines and the Special Boat Service and wrote a book about Franklin, ‘A Brilliant Little Operation.’ The memorial is a few yards due west of Woodside Pier and Ferry Terminal.
