Castlerigg Stone Circle

Castlerigg Stone Circle, Cumbria

Castlerigg Stone Circle

Where is it – England, North West England

Who looks after it –  National Trust

Castlerigg is one of several stone circles in the North West, and arguably the best known. It was constructed in the Neolithic Age, around 3,000BC, and is about 97-100 feet (30 metres) in diameter. Set against the backdrop of the Lakeland fells, it is a dramatic location and, especially on a lonely winter’s day, very atmospheric.

Castlerigg was one of the first scheduled ancient monuments in Britain in 1883. It is owned by English Heritage and cared for by the National Trust. If you’re driving to it, there is limited parking in a lay-by. In any event, take stout shoes – it can be wet and muddy
