Carnforth Railway Station has achieved immortality by being featured in the 1945 film, ‘Brief Encounter’, directed by David Lean and starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. The film is regularly judged to be one of the most romantic movies of all time. The station is now a popular heritage centre. The cafeteria has been restored to its 1940s condition and there are exhibitions featuring Brief Encounter, David Lean and railways – with a growing collection of memorabilia. Entry is free, but donations are welcome. Even better – buy a cup of tea and something to eat.
