Caedmon’s Cross is a stone Victorian memorial erected in Whitby in 1898 to England’s first known poet, the Anglo-Saxon Caedmon. He has a nice story – click the button below to read it. The memorial is highly decorated and in the churchyard of St Mary’s church, at the top of the 199 steps leading up from the town.  St Mary’s – and the nearby abbey – are both worth a visit anyway!
