Do note that Bolton Castle in Yorkshire is nowhere near the town of Bolton in Lancashire! Bolton Castle is a wonderful 14th century castle built on a grand scale by Sir Richard le Scrope, Lord Chancellor of England to Richard II, whose descendants still own the place. Apparently, there is a mystery as to the source of Scrope’s wealth…

Mary, Queen of Scots was held prisoner at Bolton Castle for 6 months and was allowed to use the time hunting and learning English. It was besieged, and badly damaged, by Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War, but is still remarkably intact and well worth a visit. There are great views of the Yorkshire Dales from the battlements and a nice garden. There are often falconry and archery displays, too, and the adjacent chapel of St Oswald and village of Castle Bolton are both charming. Warning: Bolton Castle is used as a wedding venue – check it is open to visitors before making a special trip. Access id from a minor road off the A684 about 5 miles west of Leyburn. Aysgarth Falls are nearby.
