This is the site of the Battle of Heavenfield that took place in c634AD. It was fought between the Anglo-Saxon Northumbrians under King Oswald of Bernicia and the British led by Cadwallon – Cadwallon ap Cadfan, King of Gwynedd. There is a small church, St Oswald’s, on the site. It also marks the start (or end) of a long distance footpath between Heavenfield and Holy Island (Lindisfarne).
