Roman Dere Street, running from York to Corbridge on Hadrian’s Wall, crossed the River Tees at Piercebridge. The fascinating remains of their first bridge, a little downstream from the current one, can be seen. They are on dry land, the river having moved course. There was also a Roman fort to guard the crossing and a civilian settlement grew up round it in the 2nd century. Most of this lies under the modern village, but a portion of the eastern edge and ditch of the fort can be seen. Take a footpath on the northern end of the current bridge. You might be able to park in the car park of the George Inn; I did.Â
