Old Harry Rocks, Purbeck

The recognisable Old Harry Rocks are three chalk formations, including a stack and a stump, located at Handfast Point, on the Isle of Purbeck, about 1 mile from Studland. They mark the most easterly point of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you’ve seen them on a screensaver, now you know what they are. Old Harry might be another name for the Devil, or reference to a famous local pirate, Harry Paye, who lived in the 14th/15th century. Until 1896 there was another chalk stack known as Old Harry’s Wife, but erosion caused her to tumble into the sea. There are various walks nearby.
