Eleven O One is a 9 foot high statue in weathered steel created in 1914 by Ray Lonsdale and erected on the seafront at the old North East coastal mining town of Seaham. It depicts a British soldier immediately after hearing the news of the Armistice at 11 o’clock on 11th November 1918 and is immensly evocative. Also known as ‘Tommy’, the nickname for British troops since the 18th century, the town of Seaham raised the necessary money to keep him – but they certainly don’t mind other people paying a visit.
