IWM Duxford is mainly an aviation museum housed on a historic RAF airfield, which was also used by the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War. It houses the Imperial War Museum’s huge collection of historic aircraft and other large items, such as tanks. Permanent exhibitions include the American Air Museum, Battle of Britain, Land Warfare and Historic Duxford. In addition to the vintage aircraft, which often have stories to tell, many of the buildings are original too. So – you can get up close and personal with some of the most famous aircraft ever, including the Spitfire, Lancaster, Concorde and Vulcan. Duxford is one of the UK’s premier aircraft museums and enormous, so allow enough time. If you are interested in aviation, allow at least a day. Air shows are also a regular feature and vintage aircraft can be seen on the runways, and even in the air, at almost any time.
