Calton Hill, Edinburgh

Calton Hill, at the east end of Edinburgh City, is a landmark that is included within the boundary of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It is home to a number of monuments, not least the unfinished National Monument, the Nelson Monument, an 18th century cannon captured when the British invaded Burma in 1885 and the Dugald Stewart Monument. Everyone has heard of Dugald Stewart. There are panoramic views from Calton Hill, across the City, to the Palace of Holyrood and over to Leith. It is also used by citizens and visitors alike for casual strolling and for watching outdoor celebratory events – such as Hogmanay fireworks and the revived ‘traditional’ Celtic Beltane Fire Festival.
