Baddesley Clinton has a very long history, with some fascinating tales to tell. For centuries, it was a perfectly respectful medieval manor. Then, in 1438, it was bought by a wealthy lawyer, John Brome, who got himself murdered – and was avenged. Eventually, ownership passed to the Ferrers family, who called the place home for 500 years. The Ferrers were staunch Roman Catholics, and the house comes complete with a priest hole hidden in the medieval sewer. Indeed, in the mayhem of the Reformation, in 1591 Baddesley Clinton was raided by priest hunters. The Ferrers family was not wealthy, but managed to hang on to their property through the years. Its survival until today is largely due to its eccentric Victorian owners, Marmion and Rebecca Ferrers and their extremely close friends, Lady Georgina Chatterton and Edward Dering, collectively known as ‘the Quartet’. They left behind a picturesque and charming moated manor house dating from the 15th century and set in lovely gardens. Of course, it is allegedly haunted.
