Scarborough Castle has long dominated the town, perched on a headland that has been used by man for at least 3,500 years. The Romans built a signal station here, Scarborough was a Royal Castle in the Middle Ages, besieged by Parliament during the Civil War and shelled by the German Navy in 1914. The ruins of the gatehouse, curtain wall and keep are impressive, there's an interesting museum in the 18th century Master Gunner's House - and it's a great place for a picnic.
