STANWICK CAMP

Once the centre of the powerful Brigante tribe, the remains of the massive ditch fortifications around this Iron Age site can still be made out. It is impressive. Some 4 miles long, the defences enclosed an area of 766 acres. However, don't be misled by the suggestion of a reconstructed section - there's very little to see and, unless you're an enthusiast, it's probably not worth going out of your way for. As of July 2016, the site was not that well maintained - though the paths are clear. The most important tribe in pre-Roman northern Britain, the Brigantes later moved to Aldborough Roman town, Isurium Brigantum.
