ST MARY’S, Edwinstowe
ST MARY’S, Edwinstowe

Parish church dating from 12th century which was, according to legend, where Robin Hood wed Maid Marion. Allegedly, it is also the site of a wooden chapel built over the spot where the decapitated body of King Edwin of Northumbria was originally buried after being killed by Penda, King of Mercia, at the Battle of Heathfield in 633AD. 'Edwinstowe' means 'Edwin's place'. NB The church is not always open to visitors.
