500 Places to visit in Britain

Places to visit in Britain, LondonA Bit About Britain’s attraction directory now lists 500 places to visit in Britain – places of interest, things to see and do in England, Wales and Scotland. At last count, this includes 78 castles and forts, 92 museums and galleries, 58 gardens, 26 stately homes and palaces, 19 cathedrals and 23 curiosities… I’m pleased, but there’s a very long way to go. For example, there are over 60 Church of England and Roman Catholic Cathedrals alone just in England and probably hundreds of castles and forts (it depends what you call ‘a castle’).

If you haven’t already played with the attraction directory, click on the menu and have a browse. The idea is to provide very basic information about a place or attraction – what it is, where it is – and where you can find out more. So, there will be a link to a relevant website if there is one and, if it’s been featured in A Bit About Britain there will be a link to that post too. You can search by various criteria – eg location and attraction type. Whilst it’s not yet an invaluable resource for people looking for places to visit in Britain – because there are literally thousands – the attraction directory can already give you some ideas for days out, or itineraries.

Places to visit in Britain, ScotlandUnlike places featured in articles found on A Bit About Britain’s blog page, attractions listed in the directory have not necessarily been visited by anyone associated with A Bit About Britain – and do not need to be. However, every place featured in A Bit About Britain should have a listing on the directory.

I am not entirely happy with the way the information and images are currently displayed in the attraction directory, and would also like to use maps more; these things will be looked at – one thing at a time (I have a steep learning curve).

Meanwhile, I hope you find the directory useful. If you have any suggestions for places to visit in Britain that you’d like to see included – particularly if you have good quality, digital, free to use photographs you are prepared to donate, please drop me a note via the contact page.

What an amazing achievement Mike. It is an excellent directory and I will be making use of it when I visit new parts of the UK. Keep up the great work.

Hi Mike, how do you ever do it!? So much work. But it seems to work well. If we want to submit a place do you want a write- up as well as a photo and location?

Hi Mike – amazing that you’ve achieved so many and managed to organise them so well. Just been to see the outside of your first pic … and a few other London sites. There is so much to see – we are rich in history … cheers Hilary

Actually, I think the taxonomy on A Bit About Britain is fairly logical, though I’m sure I don’t always get it right. My only concern is whether the directory, which currently works with a plug-in, conflicts with other posts so far as SEO is concerned. I don’t know the answer to that!

A yeoman’s task you’ve undertaken. I’m glad to discover that there are still yoemen about. Nice idea about having more maps. It’s a big part of what makes printed guidebooks valuable.

Thanks for visiting A Bit About Britain. What do you think?
