STANWICK CAMP

STANWICK CAMP

Once the centre of the powerful Brigante tribe, the remains of the massive ditch fortifications around this Iron Age site can still be made out. It is impressive. However, don't be misled by the suggestion of a reconstructed section - there's very little to see and, unless you're an enthusiast, it's probably not worth going out of your way for. As of July 2016, the site was not that well maintained - though the paths are clear. The Brigantes later moved to Aldborough Roman town.
