The magnificent ruins of this once mighty fortress of the powerful Neville family, where Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later King Richard III, spent part of his childhood. Richard subsequently owned the castle when he married Anne Neville; their son was born and, sadly, died in it. You can imagine the hooves galloping over the non-existent drawbridge and the views from the top of the keep are amazing. There's a small exhibition, which includes a replica of the stunning Middleham Jewel, a 15th century pendant found nearby.
